The Wood Building is an inspiring, state-of-the-art facility for STEM education that engages students both in and out of the classroom.

The Wood Building is a new 49,000-square-foot classroom building on the main campus of Johnston Community College in Smithfield, NC. This facility includes staff and faculty offices in addition to programming for mathematics, engineering, and technology-focused curriculum, with maker spaces, a robotics lab, mechanical and electrical engineering labs, a physics lab, a chemistry lab. The design also incorporates collaboration and study “third places” for student use between classes, including individual touchdown spaces, group workspaces, and lounge areas.

The building is oriented to maximize natural lighting for learning spaces, while allowing for shading and control of heat gain. Coordinated technology infrastructure dispersed throughout the building allows for moderations to be made easily as technology changes and evolves. Lastly, the building is universally accessible, with automatic door operators at the main entrance, and convenient access to learning and support spaces.
