The two-story, brick and clay-tile-roof building has previously undergone two additions. The cumulative effects of multiple renovations have left the floor plan inaccessible and unintuitive, and much of the interior space is without natural light.
HH Architecture has been selected for the comprehensive renovation, replacing all interior walls, stairs, mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems, allowing this building to meet current codes. Additionally, there is the addition of an elevator to serve the second floor levels of both the original building and annex to create an accessible route and reliable egress. The exterior breezeway and stair will be demolished and a building addition will enclose the connection between the two structures with conditioned space.
East Carolina University intends to use the Whichard Building as the new home of the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences’ offices, as well as office space for the Foreign Languages and Literatures department.
