Wake N.C. State University STEM Early College High School Opens its Doors

In a partnership between Wake County Public Schools, N.C. State University, and North Carolina New Schools Project, the Wake N.C. State University STEM Early College High School offers students an opportunity to earn college credit for free while still in high school. The school opened its doors with a ribbon cutting ceremony on September 20, 2013, complete with students, faculty, staff, and members of this unique partnership.

This public school program is focused on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and leverages the resources of N.C. State University and its engineering program. The new high school is located in the Cherry Building on the Spring Hill portion of Centennial Campus at N. C. State University.

HH Architecture designed the renovation of this 29,428 square foot building to create a dynamic, modern, and collaborative learning space focused on the STEM curriculum. The design included keeping the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems exposed in the classrooms and painted in different colors for a unique teaching opportunity.

The project included new science laboratories, a student commons area, office space, and a reception or lobby area. Eight new classrooms were designed for flexibility and project-based learning to foster collaboration, group projects, and hands-on learning. The building also required a new heating and cooling system, plumbing, electrical, and fire protection system for the entire building.

Green features include low VOC materials, renovation of an existing building, and energy efficiency features to comply with Senate Bill 668.
